Asylum

Foreign nationals may apply for asylum in the U.S. if the are seeking protection because they have endured persecution or fear they will endure persecution as a result of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. Applications for asylum must be submitted within one (1) year from time of entry.

Refugee

Foreign nationals, located outside the U.S., who are not firmly resettled in another country and are seeking protection because they have suffered persecution or fear persecution as a result of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion may apply for refugee status in the U.S.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

TPS may be designated for a foreign country in certain circumstances where it is unsafe for nationals to return to their country of origin or country of residence. TPS is a temporary benefit that does not provide immigration status or lead to lawful permanent residence; however, approved TPS applicants are not removable from the U.S, can obtain an employment authorization document (EAD), and may be granted travel authorization. Please note country designations for TPS are temporary and therefore subject to change.
